The Stanley JC509 is a sturdy jump starter that everyone should have in the trunk of their cars. It’s really an indispensable tool that can get you out of rough situations. Having one will also allow you to help out another driver in distress.

This jump starter measures 8 x 11.25 x 13.5 inches and weighs 18 pounds. It’s a good thing it has a sturdy handle so you can lug it around anywhere easily.

Can I use it right out of the box?
No. You need to charge it for 36 hours first. Some people just charge it for 16 hours, and it still works fine, though. The battery holds the juice for a long time, so you don’t need to keep recharging it too often.

There are three LED lights on top that show you how much charge you got left. If you’re planning on going for a long trip, make sure to charge it until the green one lights up.

I sure hope this is foolproof. I’m worried about causing damage to my car.
Well, it has a reverse polarity alarm that goes off in case you connect it the wrong way. It’s going to be pretty hard to mess it up.

Stanley JUMPiT Battery Jumper Gadget ChargingIt can power my gadgets too, right?
Yes it can. As it has a USB port, you can easily charge your phones, tablets, and other gadgets with it. Got something that needs 12 Volts? Yup, this jumper is ready for that too.

What other things does this jumper can do?
Other than maintaining your car battery voltage and charging your gadgets, the Stanley jump starter also has a built-in 120 PSI compressor complete with a pressure gauge. Good enough to keep your car tires at proper PSI at any time, anywhere. It’s also powerful enough for blowing rafts, floats, and bike tires.

Do note that it’s going to be a slow process. This is in now way as quick as a stand-alone tire compressor. Still, it’s there to give you an extra peace of mind when you’re on a trip.

There’s an LED flashlight included too. It cannot be detached from the main body so the uses are kind of limited, but for emergency lighting, it works fine. The LED light can be rotated 270 degrees for added flexibility.

So, what are the drawbacks?
Oddly enough, there’s no extension cord included. You can get a heavy duty one for five bucks but it will be nice if Stanley already put one in the package so the buyers won’t have to get one separately. Some people just assumed that it’s included so they didn’t buy one. Very few people enjoy an extra trip to the hardware store.

And I hear these things die in three to four years. That’s kinda suck, isn’t it?
Yes, that’s just how current rechargeable battery technology goes. It’s the same story with the batteries in your smartphone or laptop. Sure, awesome battery techs are emerging every year, but for them to leave the lab and get used by the masses may take another generation or so. And that’s us being optimistic.

For now we just need to make do with what we have. You may have to buy a new jumper in four years, but considering how useful this thing is and the four years of time when it’s going to being used over and over again, that’s still a reasonable investment to make. Using a simple math, the cost of this unit divided by the number of days in four years yields about a nickel per day.

Anyway, with this thing at the ready, no Monday morning is too cold for your car to start. A quick jump will wake that lazy battery in a snap. In short, a jumper is certainly one of the most important things to have in your car
